Job title: Underwriting Assistant – Broker Business

Salary: £35,000

Location: London

PURPOSE OF ROLE

A well-established commercial insurer is looking for an Underwriting Assistant to join its Broker Business team in London. The role provides administrative and operational support to a team of underwriters, keeping new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments moving smoothly and making sure broker submissions, policy documentation and system records are accurate and up to date.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong administrative skills and an interest in commercial insurance to build a career in underwriting support, working closely with underwriters, brokers, Finance and IT.

RESPONSIBILITIES

•      Providing administrative and operational support to the Broker Business department across new business, renewals and mid-term adjustments.

•      Maintaining accurate underwriting, broker correspondence, survey and policy records within internal systems, in line with agreed standards and deadlines.

•      Supporting underwriters with the production of quotations, policy documentation, endorsements and renewal invitations.

•      Reviewing broker submissions for completeness and escalating queries or concerns to underwriters as appropriate.

•      Producing renewal lists, claims information and management information reports for the underwriting team.

•      Liaising with Finance on broker, client and premium-related queries, including premium receivable follow-up.

•      Supporting product administration, system testing and operational improvements alongside Underwriting Management and IT.

•      Assisting with the company’s marketing and promotional events and providing flexible support on ad hoc projects.

DAY-TO-DAY

•      Preparing and issuing underwriting correspondence to brokers and clients.

•      Entering and updating policy and broker data on internal systems.

•      Chasing missing information from brokers and keeping submissions on track.

•      Maintaining an effective and well-organised filing system.

•      Processing monthly survey fees and departmental expenses.

•      Pulling together reports and management information for the underwriting team.

•      Reporting system issues and supporting testing and system updates.

EXPERIENCE

•      Previous administrative or support experience, ideally within insurance or another regulated, professional environment.

•      A good understanding of the insurance industry, commercial insurance processes and broker service expectations would be an advantage.

•      Experience producing management information and reports is desirable.

•      Data analytics exposure (Python, Power BI) would be a bonus but is not essential.

•      Knowledge of Chinese would be an advantage but is not essential.

SKILLS

•      Strong administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks accurately and to deadline.

•      Excellent attention to detail when handling policy documents, broker correspondence, data entry and reporting.

•      Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to deal professionally with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders.

•      Good numeracy and analytical skills, including working with premiums, claims information, renewal lists and management information.

•      Proficient Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.

•      A collaborative team player who maintains confidentiality, professionalism and compliance awareness always.
