Senior Property & Casualty Underwriter - New Business

Location: Birmingham

Salary: Negotiable DOE

The Opportunity

Our client is a leading global property & casualty insurer with a long-standing reputation for taking care of customers, communities and colleagues, and a culture rooted in innovation and collaboration. Their Business Insurance division helps companies across the UK and Ireland identify, prepare for and mitigate risk through a broad range of property and casualty solutions – from SME business traded directly, to Commercial Accounts traded via brokers, through to Corporate Solutions for large risk-managed companies.

We're looking for a driven Senior Underwriter to join a high-performing branch team. You'll take the lead on developing and managing new business submissions, quotes and binds, working strategically alongside broker partners to craft insurance solutions that genuinely meet customer needs – bringing sharp analytical thinking to risk evaluation, and the confidence to negotiate terms and close deals in competitive markets.

Key Responsibilities

•        Manage the profitability, growth and retention of an assigned book of business, primarily moderate-to-complex accounts.

•        Underwrite and negotiate moderate-to-complex risks, including Mid-Term Adjustments, to minimise risk and maximise profitability.

•        Proactively manage your portfolio against KPIs, targeting new business and retention.

•        Identify and capture opportunities to write additional lines of business.

•        Prepare, lead and present Underwriting Reviews for individual policies, portfolios and schemes.

•        Cultivate relationships with internal partners to identify cross-selling opportunities.

•        Foster relationships with brokers to market and sell products in line with risk appetite; some travel to meetings required.

•        Develop and execute pipeline plans in partnership with the sales and renewal teams.

•        Train and mentor less experienced underwriters.

About You

•        A Levels or equivalent qualification.

•        Deep knowledge of relevant products, the regulatory environment and the local insurance market.

•        Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to underwrite and make decisions in line with risk appetite.

•        Excellent communication skills, with the ability to negotiate confidently with brokers.

•        Experience coaching and mentoring others.

•        A strong underwriting, product knowledge, financial analysis or risk assessment background is essential.
